Animation files are composed of a lot of image files and can take a lot of storage space. Shots in the Studio are open and ready to use to allow for fast loading time when you open them.
Files can be compressed in the Studio to free up storage space.
Callipeg automatically saves the shot you are working on every 30 seconds. You can backup your file using the backup notifications. If you allow the application to use iCloud, your backups will be saved in your iCloud folder Callipeg > Backups. Learn more
You can choose the definition of your shot in pixels. For example 1920×1080 pixels, 2K or 4K. The performance will depend on your iPad specs. The higher the definition and the more sheets and layers you create, the more performance and storage you will need.
Only the number of sheets matters. You can have as many layers as you want, until you reach the sheets limit. This limit depends on the storage of your device. The size of one sheet equals the length of the shot in pixels multiplied by the height of the shot in pixels multiplied by 4 bytes. Here is how to estimate your possible number of sheets depending on your remaining available storage : (remaining available storage in bytes / (height of your shot in pixels x length of your shot in pixels x 4)) / 3 = number of sheets you can add in Callipeg This calculation includes a rough estimation of the size of undos and backups, but this will depend on how many actions you do, the number of backups you have set and other conditions. So consider this as a very rough estimation to have an idea of how many sheets you can add. So, for example, if you have 50Gb left on your iPad storage and a 1920×1080 pixels shot, you can add (50 000 000 000 / (1920x1080x4))/3= 2009 more sheets in the app. The performance of navigation and fluidity of drawing will also depend on your iPad processor and RAM.
You can export to several files formats:
- PEG is the Callipeg file format. It can only be opened in Callipeg.
- MP4 video format.
- HEVC video format with or without transparency.
- GIF animated image format.
- PNG image format which can be exported as a sequence or a still image, with the possibility of exporting with the layer structure (one folder per layer which contains one PNG file per frame or per sheet.)
- JSON format that can be imported into TVPaint Animation, Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe After Effects
- OCA format that can be imported into Blender
- XDTS format that can be imported into CLIP STUDIO PAINT, Toei Digital Exposure Sheet and OpenToonz
You can import PEG, image, video and audio files from the Import button in the Studio. You can also import JPG and PNG images directly in your shots with drag and drop from another app or through the action panel of your sheets. You can also import video and audio files directly from the video and audio layers in the timeline.
If the export process does not conclude and it is impossible for you to export your animation as a video file, this means the shot is probably too long.
An animation shot is usually between 1 and 12 seconds long. If the shot you are working on is bigger than 30 seconds, this might cause memory overflow of the RAM of your device while the app is processing the images to render them into a video file. You will only be able to export portions of a large animation file.
In the export tab, tap on the start and end frame numbers under the preview to change the values and export a segment of your animation (e.g. 1 to 100, then 101 to 200).
Ultimately it is advised to work on small shots to avoid memory overflows.

If all the drawing sheets’ content in your shot has disappeared, this might be caused by a cache issue. Close and restart the app to fix the issue.
A school or organisation can search and purchase Callipeg in Apple School&Business Manager.
